On Sunday, it was my turn to contribute a sermon to the ongoing series at Hither Green Baptist Church on the Psalms. With the exception of Psalm 88, these have generally been picked from the reliable Christian favourites in the psalter, such as 27, 67 and 103. One area we hadn’t touched on were the so-called “imprecatory” psalms, which curse their enemies, calling for God to rain all sorts of destruction on their heads. These aren’t as nice and often get overlooked but they account for almost 9% of the whole collection.
