1 November is our “heating day”. That is not a nationally recognised celebration but, in the tradition Jane and I have invented, is the date on which we finally let ourselves start using the central heating a bit. I’m pleased to report that all the radiators have come smoothly back to life after the long months of hanging there as simple wall decorations!
By holding off for a long time, and even then trying to make only limited use of the heating, we are helping keep our fuel bills down and also live in a way that makes a little less negative impact on the planet. A bit of artificial warmth is good for helping washing (and our walls, after another episode of leaks from upstairs) dry out but, for personal warmth, we try to remember that we’ve both got a wardrobe full of clothes and that wearing an extra layer is more responsible than turning up the thermostat.
