I wonder how long it would take me to listen to at least one album by every jazz artist? Too long to fit into a life, I imagine, even if that was my main hobby. However, the internet is making it easier to improve my genre literacy. Tonight I am following a recommendation from Last.fm and listening to Lee Morgan on Spotify.
Morgan was a hard-bop trumpet virtuoso who died before I was born. Looking down his biography and the connections mentioned I am sure I must have heard of him before and probably even listened to his played. However, I am exploring and enjoying his music directly for the first time. The internet is making it much easier to rectify gaps in my musical literacy, for which I am profoundly grateful.
Now, I wonder who that is playing bass (and taking a short solo) on the track The Mercenary on the album Sonic Boom…
