Jane’s Mum and one of her sisters are coming up to visit today. Jane fancied taking them out for a pub lunch so we made a couple of exploratory visits earlier this week. The results? One miss and one definite hit:
- The Prince of Wales, Iffley
- A pleasant pub tucked away in Iffley village. I’d visit again for the ambience and the beer — I enjoyed a dark, rich pint of Centurion’s Ghost — but not for the food. No complaints about the service but the price seemed very expensive for what was served up. My cumberland sausage and mash tasted good but the gravy in Jane’s steak and ale pie was excessively salty.
- Conclusion: Miss
- The Fox, Boar’s Hill
- Despite mixed reviews, we were very impressed with The Fox. Business seems to be thriving there and we were lucky to get a table in the bar area. The food was, overall, a touch more expensive than The Prince of Wales but, this time, the quality was worth it. Jane enjoyed a chicken breast with mozzarella while I couldn’t resist venison wellington. No complaints about the beer either — mine was a Waggledance — and the service was good even though the staff were rushed off their feet keeping up with the custom.
- Conclusion: Hit
