Do we produce too much light pollution? I’m tempted to say yes. You can see the UK lit up on a view of the earth from space and, from the ground, it is only when you get well away from built up areas that you can really appreciate the stars of the night sky. The light has an impact on the environment, as does the generation of the energy to power it.
However, reflecting on a recent night drive, it is so much easier when the road is lit rather than just relying on the lights of the car. Maybe the recent news of the development of bioluminescent trees will provide a solution – low light but naturally powered. Sadly, it seems that this might still be one of those projects realised more in Science Fiction than actual fact for a few more years at least.
