Back to Back

Here are a couple of watercolour sketches I did while stewarding for the Artweeks exhibition at St Clement’s last week:

Relatively tight watercolour sketch of the church interior

St Clement’s – ‘tight’ sketch

Relatively loose watercolour sketch of the church interior

St Clement’s – ‘loose’ sketch

For the first, I was looking up, trying to judge relationships between the shapes and then looking down to draw before adding some washes of colour. For the second, the drawing was entirely blind and I then took a very free approach when adding colour washes too.

I’m obviously not a neat painter at the best of times but I definitely prefer the energy of the second one. What about you?
