Summer Prune

The general rule for pruning flowering shrubs is that ones that bloom before mid-summer get pruned once the flowering finish and ones that flower after-midsummer get pruned in the spring. Do check before you rush out with your secateurs but I know that both Buddleja globosa and Philadelphus fall into the summer pruning category and so I was out doing some cutting back this morning

In some ways, pruning is the easy part; it is grinding up the leaves and thin twigs for compost and setting the thicker branches apart for firewood that took a lot more time and energy but I managed to get a good way on with the task this morning. One more Philadelphus to go and then hopefully some rain this weekend to help them all get over the shock and get on with growing the branches that will produce next year’s blooms.
