I have been taking advantage of now working in the centre of Oxford to sometimes pick up coffee beans from Cardews in the covered market. They have a decent selection on the Fair Trade side and their prices aren’t too bad. On the other hand, they aren’t cheap and I also find the results a bit weak; they probably expect more beans per cup than I am used to putting in, which also increases the price.
However, I have found that they can be combined with the inexpensive beans from supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi to get a best of both worlds solution. I’m still experimenting with ratios but a cocktail of coffees seems to be a good way forward, just like I often make a cocktail of tea leaves or a cocktail of bread flours to combine various characteristics for an enhanced result.
