Light and Shade at St Clements
Light and Shade at St Clement’s

Looking back through my sketchbooks, I can see that I’m addicted to (relatively) straight lines for shading. Filling in areas with cross hatching to create different tonal hatching is effective and actually rather satisfying in itself. However, there are other means to the same end.

In this sketch, where I was exploring the areas of light and shade on a sunny day down at St Clement’s, you can see that I’ve begun making efforts to expand my visual vocabulary to cover what is effectively a compressed line, worked round and round to fit into the space and with a variety of balance between line and gap.
