I was struck by a thought from Brother Maynard’s site this morning. His main theme was the size of churches and what constitutes too big or too small. However, it was exploring the imagery of salt and light (drawn from Jesus’ sermon on the mount).
The fresh perspective that struck me was considering how a single strong light source clearly illuminates what is around it but also creates dark shadows. If you want to reduce the amount of darkness you need to replace or at least supplement it with small lights dotted around the place. I’d thought of the deleterious effects of concentrating too much salt in one place before (I always remember an incident with a baked potato and a free flowing salt cellar from my youth!) but I hadn’t thought about light in the same way.
