Looking along the church roof on a sunny evening

St Clement’s Roof

Some whose job is climbing up and working on church towers and other tall buildings would probably rightly scoff at my claim on this title but I was up on the church roof  last night helping one of our wardens clear out fallen leaves from the gutters. There weren’t as many as we feared but it was a worthwhile precaution to take with the threat of torrential rain this week. There are some problems with the way the Georgian architect designed the roof; ugly external gutters and water spouts were avoided but, especially when the drains block with debris, the water rises over the waterproofed courses creating unwanted interior water features!

We are currently sans verger so I may be returning up here again particularly as we move from summer to autumn, with increased chance of rain and the certainty of a lot more leaves landing up there.
