Apparently there is a project taking place to put small cameras in the horns of wild rhinos. Is that “Big Brother” gone mad? Maybe not.
The initiative is to protect rhinos which often suffer at the hands of poachers. Previously it has been all to easy for poachers to kill the animal, take its horn and slip away long before game wardens are alerted. Protect RAPID (Real-time Anti-Poaching Intelligence Device) also includes a heart rate monitor and GPS tracker and can allow remote viewing of the horn cam and a quick response when the heart rate (or, sadly, sudden lack thereof) indicates a problem.
It may not offer invulnerability to each rhino thus equipped but certainly makes the task much more dangerous for the poachers, which may encourage them to find other ways to make a living.
