This evening I watched the documentary Black Gold (2006), which looks at the challenges faced by coffee growers in places like Ethiopia when their product is viewed as a commodity in world trade and they can’t get a living wage by growing it. It reaffirms to me the reason why fair trading is essential.
I wonder whether there is any way to understand the supply chains between me and things like coffee, bananas or cane sugar? It seems to me that the point where they start passing through an excessive number of middlemen, who exist as much to cream a small profit off as to get the goods from producer to customer is a potential place for injustice to fester.
I will certainly continue seeking out fairly traded goods as a priority.
