The other day, I was taking down some shelves my Dad put up. Having been engaged in putting up a number of shelves and guitar hangers recently, I was intrigued to notice that, in almost all of the holes, he had used wooden matchsticks to plug the holes. Compared to plastic plugs, they can be packed in to fit the hole, they come out easily once the screw is removed and the extracted pieces can be saved for re-use or kindling.

So, my questions are do plastic plugs offer any advantage over matchsticks and, if they do, is it possible to get recycled versions?
