Butt Hole

Water Butt Hole
Water Butt

Apologies for the childish sounding title but it seemed appropriate for my recent labours and one that I’m unlikely to have cause to use again for a long time.

We’ve now got the second giant water butt installed. In order to make sure it is lower than the one by the shed, we needed a hole in the ground (see Running Water from Monday). This week, I’ve dug that out, lined the base with compacted rubble and sand and now I’ve also got the hose connected up.

It will feed from the tap near the bottom of the butt near the shed. When that is full, the water pressure should be ample to push water down to this one. Should this one get too full, it has an overflow which gives out into the canal but this will all be rain water (so no different from what falls directly in the canal) and I don’t anticipate I’ll often have much need for that end of things.

I think we’re ready to proceed with regular watering without increasing our water bill and I’m rather looking forward to some rain in this coming week to check it working in action rather than just with the simulated tests I have done so far.
