Shot at Dawn

Shot at Dawn

This is my digital painting from our visit to the National Memorial Arboretum today. There were quite a few emotionally stirring memorials there but I was particularly struck by the one for those who were executed by their own side, taken out and shot at dawn. Perhaps some of them deserved it but many were shell-shocked and often very young as well, causing them to abandon duties or posts. They were posthumously pardoned a few years ago and this area honours them at last.

If you visit, head to the eastern-most edge of the site: a symbolic positioning where the dawn first strikes the land.
